A Real Grocery List for a Heart-Healthy Week (Not a Diet Plan)

April 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Fresh groceries laid out for a week of heart-healthy meals

Nutrition advice for older adults tends to arrive as a restriction list — foods to cut, portions to shrink — without much guidance on what to actually put in the cart. This is the opposite: a specific, seven-day grocery list built around ingredients that are easy to chew, simple to prepare in small batches, and genuinely enjoyable to eat, not clinical substitutes for the real thing. It's built from what our caregivers actually shop for and cook during companion care visits, tested against real appetites and real budgets, not a nutritionist's ideal. We include swaps for common issues like low appetite, mild dysphagia, and medication interactions with certain foods (grapefruit and leafy greens come up more than you'd expect). If mealtime has become a source of stress rather than pleasure, this list is meant to make Tuesday's dinner easier to plan than it was last week.
